Kira Morton teaches first grade in the South Bronx. She has found that incorporating yoga into the classroom has often been the fuel that keeps her classroom running. Integrating yoga into curriculum can facilitate children’s growth socially, emotionally, cognitively, physically and creatively. Yoga movement and breathing can encourage a positive social culture through the creation of community and trust between students and student to teacher. Children are provided with an outlet for their energy, as well as self-expression. If there is a value placed on self-expression, children will be more comfortable exploring it. This will then enhance their understanding of themselves and others. Yoga teaches us to connect our breath with our bodies and minds. It enhances flexibility, gross motor skills, strength and self-confidence. Additionally, it can improve concentration, attention and bring an overall sense of peace and calm. As educators, we have a job to assist children in exploring and mastering their Multiple Intelligences. By bringing yoga into the classroom, we can create an organic and holistic environment which caters to the individual needs of our students.
You don’t have to be a Yoga Teacher to incorporate a little bit of yoga into the classroom…If you have love for children and a passion for teaching…come join us!
